The Aroma Girls

As with all good family restaurants go, Aroma has been generations in the making.

Starting off with our great grandmother, then my grandmother, from my grandmother to my mom and now to me. Baking, cooking, basically anything done in the kitchen has been part of our family for many generations. So much so, it seems like second nature.

The kitchen has always been the heart of our home. I can relate so many stories where family get-togethers almost always ended up being in the kitchen with my grandmother making a variety of her delectable curries and the softest thava rotis this side of the equator. I wish there was a way to bottle those aromas. The ones I grew up with, the ones that kept us feeling warm and satisfied.

As a child, I would watch my mom cook and bake. Mom has always been the wild card… the explorer, the culinary adventurer! I used to watch her create pieces of art, effortlessly, without breaking a sweat. Like she was waving a magic wand and ‘poof’ the most exquisite meals would appear!

I often checked her apron pockets just to make sure no magic wand existed. And if it did, I wanted one too!!! Mom always got me involved in the kitchen. Even if it was playing with cookie dough for an hour or rather tactfully getting me to clean up! Whatever it was, I revelled in it. Mom always said and still does to this day that “If you know how to eat, you should know how to cook!”.

There couldn’t be truer words spoken from a wiser woman!

I had a perfect culinary childhood. Mom being the adventurer she is, encouraged me to explore the world of various cuisines, from Italian to Thai to eating Berliners in Hamburg in snowy winter to the most superb baguettes and Brie whilst walking through Paris!

However, nothing quite makes you feel satisfied as Indian cuisine. I’m not sure mom realised how carefully I was watching her… But watched her I did. Watched as she chopped and sliced, minced and mashed, sizzled, grilled, whisked and baked!

Then one day, mom had this incredible idea to take our passion and truly bring it to life... and Aroma Restaurant was born!

"Family business take extreme pride the freshness of the food. I can vouch for this. Food is really excellent! Probably the best Indian food I've had. Service also very friendly."

Aroma Restaurant Official Facebook Page - Francios Oosthuizen

"This has to be one of the finest places to sample Indian cuisine in Johannesburg and it just so happens to be down the road from where I live! Attentive waiters, crisp, uncluttered decor, a personable host and above all, incredible food. I went there with three friends who are all big foodies and very critical when it comes to dining and they were all smitten. Aroma is Windsor's best kept secret but I suspect it won't be for long."

"Friendly and helpful host and the food was extremely good. We can definitely recommend. Children also enjoyed the experience as the food caters for their taste as well. The prawn curry is highly recommended."
